Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure that aims to reduce and reshape the labia minora and/or labia majora. While there are various techniques available for labial reduction, we have found that composite reduction labiaplasty has become our standard technique due to its comprehensive approach to addressing the external genital anatomy. Rather than simply performing wedge or edge-trim procedures, our Plastic Surgeons are experienced in this comprehensive technique that addresses all areas of concern in a single procedure, to create balance in the size, shape and colour of the labia.
Women are increasingly requesting labial reduction surgery due to concerns about the appearance of their labia and discomfort they may experience during certain activities such as sports and intimacy. While this is a common issue, many women may not be aware of the treatment options available or may feel too embarrassed to seek help. In our experience, the majority of our patients report discomfort during certain activities, with cosmetic appearance being only one factor among many.
Composite reduction labiaplasty involves removing a central portion of the labia minora, along with the underlying tissue, and then reattaching the remaining edges with absorbable sutures. Correction of clitoral hood excess and prominence can be incorporated within the same procedure. This technique addresses the clitoral hood and labia minora in continuity, allowing for reduction in both length and width of the labia while preserving the natural contour of the labia. Additionally, composite reduction labiaplasty provides an effective solution for women who experience discomfort during sexual activities or exercise due to enlarged or asymmetrical labia.
One unique advantage of composite reduction labiaplasty is its ability to address a prominent clitoris, which can prevent a potential complication called phallus deformity. This complication occurs when the clitoris appears to extend beyond the labia minora, giving it a penis-like appearance. By addressing both the clitoral hood and labia minora in continuity, composite reduction labiaplasty can help to avoid this complication.
